To upload files , folders or everything to your website , you have two choices , the first is to upload these things using FTP programs like ” ws_ftp ” program , and it is the easy choice that we will learn it later in the coming lessons , the second using file manager in the Cpanel that we are going to explain today .
First assume that we want to upload this two files , the first is an image ( open it , right click on it and then choose save target as ) , the second is another image but compressed to know how to upload compressed files so that uploading compressed files save more time in uploading .
Uploading Files in File Manager .
Go to your Cpanel , as we learned in the previous lessons .
Click on the ” file manager “ button .
( To see the images in High quality , click on the image , a new page will open , click on the image again )
Choose ” Home Directory ” and then click Go .
You will now have a new window like this , which is your File Manager .
You will find some folders like public_html , public_ftp , tmp ..etc .
Important note : All your website content will be uploaded in the public_html folder only , so that when you want to upload your home page file , which is usually named by index.html , you need to open the public_html folder first , and then upload your home page or index.html file , so that your home page file will be public_html/index.html , and then you can open this home page by open your domain normally .
You can also choose (public_html) when you are logging to your file manager , so that it will be opened ready in the public_html folder , so that you are ready to upload anything .
Now if you are not in the public_html folder , open it by clicking double click on it .
now let’s say that we want to upload the first image you have just downloaded , let’s upload it with me .
First click on ” Upload ” icon .
Now Click on browse , and choose the image .
Now hit the back button in the bottom
Now , go and put www.xxx.com/image1.jpg in your browser , and see what will appear .
You must see the image you have just uploaded .
If the index of page is still there , then you did something wrong , read the previous instructions again and understand it will .
Uploading Compressed Files .
Sometimes when are going to upload big files , like Vbulletin forums ( a well know version of forums ) , it’s size may reach 15 mega or maybe more , in that case you may think to upload it compressed , so that it’s size will reduced to 3 or 4 mega aprox. .
remember that servers do not read .rar extensions , when you want to upload any compressed files , upload them in .zip format , as it is well know and server can read it easily .
Also servers can read .tar.gz extension so you can upload using this format , but we are going to use .zip one as you just need winrar or winzip program to compress any file in .zip format .
Anyway there is extensions server can read it , and extensions not , so we will not upload any files except in .zip extension , as it the most suitable one for us and you can create it with almost any compressing program .
Now let’s go and upload our compressed image , we will repeat the previous steps , click on upload .
Click Browse and choose the compressed image this time .
wait for a while until the image uploaded successfully .
After finishing uploading click on back like the last time .
After click back , go to the compressed file or image you have just uploaded and check it .
and after you check the compressed image , the option ” Extract ” in the upper menu will be active , click on it .
Be sure that you are extracting the image in public_html folder .
Click on ” Extract File(s) ”
Now your compressed file or image has been extracted , now you can open your browser and write www.xxxx.com/image2.jpg to see your new image you have uploaded to your website m you can also send this link to your friends or share it with everyone .
If the image doesn’t appear , then you did something wrong , go back and check the instructions again .
So you can now upload anything , in our coming lesson we are going to learn how to upload all your website with all it’s contents and how to upload scripts like wordpress .
Changing Files Permission .
Sometimes when you are setup some scripts , they told you you must give the permession 777 for example to a certain file or folder , you can do this step using file manager .
Go to any file you want to give it permission , assume it will be the image that we have just extract it , and then check it .
now the permission option in the upper menu will be active , click on it .
A new small window will appear , put the permission you want ( you will find what extension and what folder to give it the permission it in the read me file of any script )
And then click on Change Permission .
Renaming Files .
An easy method to rename any file , just check the file you wanna rename , the rename option in the upper menu will be active , click on and then put it’s new name and then click on ” Rename File ” .
At last you can download any files you want from your website , just check the destination file , the download option in the upper menu will be active , click on and then save it your computer .
Remember if you can not download a folder until you compressed it first , just check the folder you want to download , compress it first by clicking on the ” compressed ” option in the upper menu , choose the zip extension , and then click on compressed file(s) .
After that you can download the compressed folder to your computer , then extract it in your computer and then you will have your folder .
P.S : this lesson is important as we will use it always in uploading files , images , scripts , so do not pass it until you understand it very well .
